What's On the Seal of the GOP Cocksuckers? - "I'm innocent and I will prove my innocence in a court of law." - #119

# 119 JOHN MERLA
ex-MAYOR OF KEYPORT, NJ
Want to know why the judge in the (GOP Cocksucker #34) Terence Weldon case was so pissed off he threw Weldon into the slammer even though Weldon had cooperated with prosecutors? Well, it might have something to do with cases like the Merla affair.

Merla used to be the mayor of Keyport who defiantly claimed he was innocent of all charges when he got smacked with two federal indictments alleging corrupt practices. He refused to resign and said: "As I've said since Feb. 22 — and I'll continue to say it today and tomorrow and the next day — I'm innocent and I will prove my innocence in a court of law."

Suddenly Merla was IN the court of law he was hoping for and guess what he did? Why that dude who swore on a stack of Bibles that he was innocent suddenly shifted gears and pled guilty to taking a $2,500 bribe. It was part of a plea agreement to have the other charges against him waived.

Merla was a GOP cocksucker until the day when fellow GOP cocksuckers called on him to resign for the good of the party. In response, Merla became an Independent.

According to APP.com, investigators alleged Merla took: $1,000 from a Woodbridge, NJ, trash hauler in 2001; $9,000 cash on Sept. 11, 2003, from two undercover agents at a Keyport diner; $2,500 from a cooperating witness at a Dec. 7, 2003, birthday party; $10,000 from a cooperating witness at a Keyport restaurant in Jan. 12, 2004; and $1,500 from undercover FBI agents on Nov. 23, 2004, at a Keyport diner.

Merla got 22 months in jail, three years of probation and a $20,000 fine.

Best of all, as he went to the slammer, his political nemesis, Robert Bergen, had the mayoral job.
